ECNS Certification and Recertification

Requirements for ECN Certification in The Emergency Communication Nurse System

  1. Emergency Communication Nurse certification occurs through the International Academy of ECN (through the IAED – International Academies of Emergency Dispatch).
  2. ECN Certification is a 3-day course for Registered Nurses with unencumbered licenses to practice in their respective state.
  3. Nurses must have completed the Emergency Medical Dispatch Course prior to taking this course, unless otherwise specified.
  4. Nurses must have a current CPR certification.
  5. Nurses must attend the entire 3-day certification course and pass the examination at 80% or better in order to achieve certification.
  6. Recertification is required every two years.

Requirements for ECN Recertification

  1. Recertification occurs through the International Academy of Emergency Communication Nursing (through the IAED – International Academies of Emergency Dispatch).
  2. Recertification occurs after the currently certified ECN passes a 50-item ECN Recertification examination at a score of 80% or better and an EMD Recertification Exam of 80% or better.
  3. Nurses must submit the required Continuing Education and Dispatch requirements as specified by the IAED.
  4. Nurses or their respective agency must submit the required fees to the IAED at the time of the application for ECNS Recertification, unless otherwise specified.
  5. Nurses must maintain an active and unencumbered license to practice in their respective state.
  6. Nurses must maintain a current CPR certification.
