ECNS Certification and Recertification
Requirements for ECN Certification in The Emergency Communication Nurse System
- Emergency Communication Nurse certification occurs through the International Academy of ECN (through the IAED – International Academies of Emergency Dispatch).
- ECN Certification is a 3-day course for Registered Nurses with unencumbered licenses to practice in their respective state.
- Nurses must have completed the Emergency Medical Dispatch Course prior to taking this course, unless otherwise specified.
- Nurses must have a current CPR certification.
- Nurses must attend the entire 3-day certification course and pass the examination at 80% or better in order to achieve certification.
- Recertification is required every two years.
Requirements for ECN Recertification
- Recertification occurs through the International Academy of Emergency Communication Nursing (through the IAED – International Academies of Emergency Dispatch).
- Recertification occurs after the currently certified ECN passes a 50-item ECN Recertification examination at a score of 80% or better and an EMD Recertification Exam of 80% or better.
- Nurses must submit the required Continuing Education and Dispatch requirements as specified by the IAED.
- Nurses or their respective agency must submit the required fees to the IAED at the time of the application for ECNS Recertification, unless otherwise specified.
- Nurses must maintain an active and unencumbered license to practice in their respective state.
- Nurses must maintain a current CPR certification.
